I never got to spend a lot of time with my father because he had issues, don't we all. He was there, but usually not in a very good state of mind or condition. However, he loved taking photos. We lost him when I was just 21 years old (we still can't find where we put him - no seriously). We didn't actually loose him, we know exactly where he is. What lives on in me is his passion for the love of the camera and taking photos. Back then it was a Polaroid Instamatic that would spit out a picture and you had this "stick" that you needed to use to coat over the photograph as soon as it popped out. It was a stick about the size of a tube of lipstick and white. I think it helped to develop the picture.
I remember the whole family gathered around while my father or mother would have this tiny 3" x 3" (approximate) picture held in her hand by his/her finger tips, frantically waving it around so it would dry. We children couldn't touch at it until it dried, but sometimes we were allowed to watch as the picture magically appear as it dried.
My father never did live long enough to know or see me when I got my first SLR camera at 20. Right after I graduated from college, three girlfriends and I embarked on a two-month long cross-country trip. With my camera, tent, sleeping bags and Smitty's hair dryer and curlers, four young women embarked on a wonderful journey across the USA. This is when my love for photography was sealed.
Today we have such amazing technology. We have instant gratification with today's Digital SLRs. I wonder what my father would think of all these changes. So Dad, here's to you, hoping you can see all my work and how I too love photography.
